1.    New Discovery Opens the Way for Brain-Like Computers

Source: University of Gothenburg

29 Nov 2021

Research has long strived to develop computers to work as energy efficiently as our brains. A study has succeeded for the first time in combining a memory function with a calculation function in the same component. The discovery opens the way for more efficient technologies, everything from mobile phones to self-driving cars.

2.    Team Builds First Living Robots That Can Reproduce

Source: University of Vermont

29 Nov 2021

Scientists have discovered a new form of biological reproduction—and created self-replicating living robots. Made from frog cells, these computer-designed organisms gather single cells inside a Pac-Man-shaped “mouth”—and release Xenobot “babies” that look and move like themselves. Then the offspring go and do the same—over and over.

3.    Artificial Intelligence That Understands Object Relationships

Source: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

29 Nov 2021

Researchers have developed a model that understands the underlying relationships between objects in a scene. Their model represents individual relationships one at a time, then combines these representations to describe the overall scene. This enables the model to generate more accurate images from text descriptions, even when the scene includes several objects that are arranged in different relationships with one another.

4.    Deep Learning Dreams Up New Protein Structures

Source: UW Medicine

1 Dec 2021

In a report, researchers describe the development of a neural network that “hallucinates” proteins with new, stable structures. In the future, the team believes it should be possible to steer the artificial intelligence so that it generates new proteins with useful features.

5.    Engineers Create Perching Bird-Like Robot

Source: Stanford University

1 Dec 2021

Years of study on animal-inspired robots and on bird-inspired aerial robots enabled a team of researchers to build their own perching robot. When attached to a quadcopter drone, their “stereotyped nature-inspired aerial grasper,” or SNAG, forms a robot that can fly around, catch and carry objects and perch on various surfaces.

6.    Physical Texture Influences Judgments of Robot Personality

Source: Osaka University

2 Dec 2021

Impressions of a robot’s personality can be influenced by the way it looks, sounds, and feels. But now, researchers have found specific causal relationships between impressions of robot personality and body texture. In a study, the researchers have revealed that a robot’s physical texture interacts with elements of its appearance in a way that influences impressions of its personality.
