1. Controlling Insulin Production with A Smartwatch
Source: ETH Zurich
7 Jun 2021
Researchers have developed a molecular switch that, once implanted, can be activated by the green light of a smartwatch. The switch is linked to a gene network that the researchers introduced into human cells. They used HEK 293 cells for the prototype. Depending on the configuration of this network – in other words, the genes it contains – it can produce insulin or other substances as soon as the cells are exposed to green light. Turning the light off inactivates the switch and halts the process.

3. Self-Sustaining, Intelligent, Electronic Microsystems from Green Material
Source: University of Massachusetts Amherst
7 Jun 2021
A research team has created an electronic microsystem that can intelligently respond to information inputs without any external energy input, much like a self-autonomous living organism. The microsystem is constructed from a novel type of electronics that can process ultralow electronic signals and incorporates a novel device that can generate electricity “out of thin air” from the ambient environment.
4. Artificial Intelligence Enhances Efficacy of Sleep Disorder Treatments
Source: University of Copenhagen – Faculty of Science
8 Jun 2021
In a new study, researchers are trying to develop an artificial intelligence algorithm that can improve diagnoses, treatments, and our overall understanding of sleep disorders. By collecting data from a variety of sources, the researchers behind the algorithm have been able to ensure optimal functionality. In all, 20,000 nights of sleep from the United States and a host of European countries have been collected and used to train the algorithm.
5. The Role of Computer Voice in the Future of Speech-Based Human-Computer Interaction
Source: Tokyo Institute of Technology
9 Jun 2021
In the modern day, our interactions with voice-based devices and services continue to increase. In this light, researchers have performed a meta-synthesis to understand how we perceive and interact with the voice (and the body) of various machines. Their findings have generated insights into human preferences, and can be used by engineers and designers to develop future vocal technologies.
6. New Twist on DNA Data Storage Lets Users Preview Stored Files
Source: North Carolina State University
10 Jun 2021
Researchers have turned a longstanding challenge in DNA data storage into a tool, using it to offer users previews of stored data files – such as thumbnail versions of image files. DNA data storage is an attractive technology because it has the potential to store a tremendous amount of data in a small package, it can store that data for a long time, and it does so in an energy-efficient way.
7. Tata Digital To Acquire Majority Stake in Online Pharmacy 1mg
Source: TechCrunch10 Jun 2021
Tata Digital, the subsidiary of Tata Sons, said on Thursday it is acquiring a majority stake in digital health startup 1mg, the latest in a series of investments as the salt-to-steel Indian conglomerate enters the digital consumer space.
